Teacher Workshop

Aquatic Ecology - How to Teach It in the K-12 Classroom

Are you near an aquatic ecosystem - wetland, pond/lake, stream/river or estuary/ocean - and you want to use it as an educational resource?  This workshop focuses on empowering you to utilize one or more freshwater or marine ecosystems as a vehicle for teaching ecology.  The workshop assumes no prior knowledge of ecology.   Nor is it a workshop that just gives you a smattering of ecologically disconnected bells and whistles aquatic activities to do with your students.

So what does the workshop do?
It teaches major ecological principles that give a unifying picture as to how aquatic ecosystems work.  We will put all the puzzle pieces together so that you see the big picture as to how freshwater and marine ecosystems are structured and how they function. In other words, we do not just cover a few popular concepts such as adaptations and food chains.
It teaches activities that will help you to educate your students about each major ecological concept. These activities are educationally rich and fun to do and will promote long-term learning and enthusiasm for ecology.
It teaches how to utilize aquatic ecology research as a vehicle to promote both the learning of ecology concepts and scientific inquiry skills.
