Gray Wolf Reintroduction
into Yellowstone National Park
Located in Wyoming and a small part of both Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park is a 2.2 million acre ecosystem that is a part of the more expansive Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Area. The latter is over 20 million acres. Once prevalent throughout the Park, the gray wolf, Canis lupus was eventually exterminated in the early 1900s. A brief summary of the reintroduction of this species in the mid 1990s is provided along with a description of some of the ecological consequences of this action.
